Valley Isle Excursions

Today I (Jake Barefoot) had a friend visiting and we thought it would be a good idea to take advantage of the Kona winds and go for a tour of the Hana side of the island with Valley Isle Excursions. Normally with our typical trade winds the Hana side of the Island is very wet with rain almost every afternoon. However during Kona winds the wind comes in from the Southwest and the Hana side of the island becomes very clear and sunny. Check out how nice it was in the video clip below.

Gemini Snorkeling

Today was a different kind of day on the Gemini, we were experiencing Kona winds that make the leeward sides of the island which is normally very sunny and nice rather cloudy and windy. This made it so the conditions of dive spot that is normally gone to were less then ideal. Luckily for us our experienced Captain had a backup plan. We went to a reef off of Mala in the Lahaina area. There used to be a large pier there that was destroyed during the hurricane in 1992. Over the years since the piers collapse the coral reef has taken over the concrete debris and an entire thriving Eco system has developed here. The video below shows some snorkeling as well as some whale watching that we did on the way back from the dive site. Even with the less then ideal weather we still managed to have an amazing day!

Jaws "Peahi" is HUGE!

Today we stepped away from our regular schedule of going on activities for something different. We had a swell that was forecast to bring the largest waves Maui has seen in fifty years. While the forecast of the wave size was a bit exaggerated the waves were still giant. A friend of mine who owns a fishing boat was hired to take out the Red Bull film crew for the day. He called me up and invited me to come along because there was still one extra seat left on the boat. I jumped on the opportunity and went along for the day. This is one of the best waves that we saw today, from the perspective of the boat and then from the perspective of the cliff where our Sales Manager Seth Cutts was able to get a shot of the same wave from where the crowd of spectators collects at the base of the pineapple fields.

Mountain Riders

Today I (Jake Barefoot) had a friend visiting from Alaska and we decided it would be fun to go for a bike ride down the crater with Mountain Riders. Sure enough we were greeted with wonderful weather that made for a very relaxing cruise down the mountain.

Maui Sporting Clays

Today my Dad (Tom Barefoot) and I (Jake Barefoot) went out shooting with Maui Sporting Clays. This shooting range is located on the southern side of the island above Makena at the end of a long private road. The range is constructed in an ancient volcanic crater, with many stations spotted throughout the perimeter as well as in the center. I have limited shotgun shooting experience, mainly from shooting with my Uncles while visiting them in Texas. David the Owner of Maui Sporting Clays was able to help out my shooting technique and scores with some simple tips. When I started I was having trouble hitting one of the two clays that were thrown at a time and when I was done I was routinely hitting both clays in the pair.

Atlantis Submarines

Today I went on the Maui Oddessy Submarine trip with Atlantis Submarines off of the coast of Lahaina. Our dive site was the shipwreck of the ancient whaling boat the "Cartheginian" that used to be moored in front of Lahaina Harbor until it was sunk some years ago. The wreck was full of fish, we saw some large schools of reef fish, a few white tipped reef sharks and even a large Blue Trevally (Omilu). The submarine is unique because it allows the riders to stay at depths of over a hundred feet for more then half an hour because of the fully pressurized cabin. To put it in perspective the recommended amount of time you can stay at this depth with conventional scuba gear is about five minutes.

Inter-Island Airways, Maui to the Volcano

Today my Dad (Tom Barefoot) and I did something a little different we went with Inter-Island Airways to the Big Island. The trip began at the commuter terminal of the Kahului airport on Maui where we met our plane and disembarked for the Hilo international airport. We viewed the Hamakua Coast on the way over and then checked out the Volcano's National Park and the Thurston Lava Tube. This trip showed us so much in one afternoon, a great choice for anyone who is curious about the volcano but does not have a great deal of time to work with. - Jake Barefoot
